Why was laval established?
In 1636, Jesuits, the first European Settlers were granted land on Île Jésus. Later on, agriculture begun in Laval. In 1675, François de Montmorency-Laval took control over this land.
In 1912, the first city in Laval was created: Laval-des-Rapides. In 1961, the first amalgamation happened. L'Abord-à-Plouffe, Renaud and Saint-Martin came together and form the city known as, Chomedey. This amalgamation was such a great success, that in 1965, the Quebec government decided to amalgamate the entire island into the city we know today, Laval (named after François de Montmorency-Laval)._ |
How has laval changed over time?
In 1636, the beginning Laval, has been an island of rural land, then 200 years later it begun its first municipalities. The first cities of Laval (Laval-des-Rapides, Laval-sur-le-lac, L'Abord-à-Plouffe) were created. In 1965, the fourteen municipalities of the island amalgamated to form the city of Laval.
Over time Laval has developed a strong manufacturing and agricultural economic base and has been a popular suburban choice for Montrealers. This has helped Laval to grow and develop. |
